A String Thing w\/ Donovan Mixon and Dave Onderdonk: Live at Studio5

Donovan Mixon and Dave Onderdonk bring their collaborative quartet A String Thing to Studio5 for an evening of original music.
A creative and forward-thinking guitarist, Donovan has been a vital presence in Chicago’s music scene since 2010. In addition to leading his World Jazz Quintet, he performs with the Great Black Music Ensemble of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM), and curates the monthly Donovan’s Garage series in Evanston. In 2025, he was honored with Evanston’s Mayor’s Award for the Arts.
Dave Onderdonk is a versatile guitarist whose work spans both classical and jazz traditions. He has performed widely and collaborated with artists including Michael Feinstein, Kurt Elling, Pharoah Sanders, and Mavis Staples.
Joined by bassist Geoff Lowe and drummer Rick Vitek, the group will focus on original compositions by Mixon and Onderdonk—music that is exploratory, lyrical, and deeply rooted in the jazz tradition.
Expect a dynamic, free-spirited set from four masterful players.
