Directed by Ranjeeta Kaur, A Story That Refused To Die showcases an untold chapter in the creation of the movie Paan Singh Tomar, offering audiences a rare glimpse behind the scenes. Presented for the first time by the Nita Mukesh Ambani Cultural Centre, the documentary weaves together never-before-seen footage, chronicling the film’s uncertain beginnings, creative process, and the unwavering persistence that drove it forward.
More than a conventional behind-the-scenes, the film offers an intimate portrait of Irrfan Khan at work — unguarded, magnetic, and fully immersed in one of his most unforgettable performances. The restored footage traces the film’s journey through moments of challenge, creativity, and unwavering commitment, revealing the heartbeat of artistic creation.
The path to bringing this story to light was far from straightforward. Damaged tapes, nearly lost reels, and meticulous efforts shaped the documentary over fourteen years, rescuing what could be saved and allowing the narrative to emerge in its own time. Revisiting this material now, audiences are invited into Irrfan Khan’s deeply personal creative space, images that echo with new resonance and poignancy.
Commemorating the sixth anniversary of Irrfan Khan’s passing, the evening extends beyond the screening with a conversation featuring filmmaker Tigmanshu Dhulia, journalist-editor Saurabh Dwivedi, and acclaimed filmmaker Vishal Bhardwaj. A musical opening by Rishabh Panchal sets the tone, followed by a Sufi performance by Mehfil-E-Zor—a Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan special.
