A PLACE FOR US BY FATIMA FARHEEN MIRZA
(TICKET PRICE INCLUDES ONE DRINK)
A Place For Us is a novel about an Indian-American Muslim family, focusing on the reunion of estranged son Amar at his sister Hadia's wedding, exploring themes of love, identity, betrayal, and the complexities of balancing cultural heritage with modern American life through the distinct perspectives of the parents (Rafiq & Layla) and their children (Hadia, Huda, & Amar). It delves into the fractures within the close-knit family, revealing how individual choices and cultural clashes create deep divides and poignant journeys to understanding.
The book club discussion will be hosted by Maariyah Qureshi: British-Pakistani and London-born, Maariyah is a lifelong lover of the arts. Though she works in marketing, her heart sits firmly in academia. Her recent MA in South Asian Studies explored the intersections of arts, history and politics, with a specialist focus on Bollywood. She channels these passions into Dial M For Maariyah, an online platform that brings together storytelling, culture and communication through both academic and communications lenses.
