This Month’s Read: We by Yevgeny ZamyatinIn this edition of A Nice Book Club, we’re reading We, a 1924 dystopian novel that explores a future society built on total conformity. It’s short, surreal, satirical, and one of the major influences behind 1984 and Brave New World. You could even call it the grandparent of the dystopian genre.Every two months, the book club votes from a list of themed categories. For example, the 'Pirates' category might include novels based on real historical figures, stories with magical elements like mermaids, or classics like Treasure Island. This way we have more variety, and it pushes readers out of their comfort zone. This month's winning category was Dystopia, and 'We' was the group’s top pick. We run a drop-in, drop-out setup with two meetups per cycle, so you can join at any stage (even if you’re still halfway through or just curious).A Nice Book Club is part of A Nice Day Out- a social community group for adults in Edinburgh who want to meet new people and do interesting things without the pressure. We have monthly events where we try new things with expert instructors. From Life Drawing to Medieval Sword Fighting, there's something for everyone, and you're all welcome.
