‘Northanger Abbey’ was written when Gothic novels were all the rage in England. At the beginning of the nineteenth century a novel was unlikely to sell unless it was to be set in exotic far off lands with an evil villain having designs on the beautiful and innocent heroine’s virtue and fortune, capturing her and imprisoning in a gloomy castle from which the handsome hero rescued her.But Jane Austen valued common sense more than romanticism so her heroine encounters her adventures as she is carefully chaperoned through an unpretentious visit to respectable Bath.
Join us on Saturday, the 27th September in this introduction to Austen’s first completed novel as a group of well-known local actors, directed by Pamela Whalan, walk through a reading of this adaptation of ‘Northanger Abbey’.
You will have to use your imagination as the actors will not be dressed in costumes of the period, nor will they have anything but basic scenery. They rely upon the brilliance of Austen’s writing and the skill of their acting to bring to you this lesser known novel of Miss Austen.
Pamela Whalan has been a member of the Jane Austen Society of Australia for more than thirty years. She has spoken at Austen conferences here and overseas. Pamela has adapted all six of Austen’s novels into playscripts and they have been successfully produced in Australia and in the United States.
Starting time is 2.00pm and will be held at St John’s Presbyterian Church Hanbury Street Mayfield.
