A Meeting Place: Turkish Ud & European Lute

Separated by cultures, continents, and centuries of parallel development, the lute and ud speak different languages today. The ud transmits an unbroken tradition of Ottoman court music, rich in melody and improvisation. The lute’s musical language is available to us only through a modern revival of lost – and probably irretrievable – traditions of polyphonic virtuosity. Yet these instruments still harken back to a common origin. Reunited in this musical encounter, they find a common language rich in meaning and nuance that neither could have expressed individually. Our collaboration represents a search for this shared idiom and a commitment to its ongoing evolution.
This program features works from the artists’ CD project, A Meeting Place, a collection of duos for Turkish ud and European lute. This is the third in a series of concerts called A Meeting Place curated by Gus Denhard with support from a 4Culture Artists Support Grant.
