Come to our living library, use your library card to rent a conversation & discover more about the secret life of care.
About this Event

Care is universal. Whether it's the act of caring for a loved one, the feeling of recieving care or the care you show towards your possessions or environment, we all have our own stories of care. Our stories may be funny, creative, artful, touching or nostalgic. They are our own, they are rich and beautiful.

Our living library gives you the chance to learn more about care by using your library card to rent time for a conversation with one of our six living books. Our books are six people with diverse experiences of providing and recieving care. At our library you will be able to rent time with up to two of our books, ask them questions and learn more about their unique experiences.

Professor John Keady from the University of Manchester will also have a stall at the event to launch his new book 'Reconsidering Neighbourhoods and Living with Dementia: spaces, places and people' published by McGraw-Hill/Open University Press. He and some of the contributing authors will be available to speak about their work and answer questions on the day.

Our six living books will include:

  • Stories of musical care (the meaning of a moment)
  • Unusual objects and their care
  • Care across the city (from practice to policy)
  • Artful care and Careful art
  • Care in the community (Title TBC)
  • How dance helped me when I needed care (Title TBC)

You will be able to book a twenty minute time slot to speak with the living book of your choice between 11am and 3pm (see agenda above for time slots). We're still confirming our last two living books, but as soon as we have all six confirmed we will email our attendees full details of each book and how to reserve a time slot with the book(s) of your choice - this will be first come first serve.

Care lab librarians* will be on-hand for the duration of the event to discuss the work of the Care lab and to answer any of your questions, as will Professor John Keady who will be available to discuss his new book on neighbourhoods and dementia.

* Dr Fox, Dr Maguire-Rosier and Dr Polonyi will be your librarians for the day. They all work on projects within the Care lab and have broad experience of creative practices in care and work in a variety of care environments.
