About this Event
A Good Digital Childhood
What does it mean for a child to flourish in a digital age?
As digital technologies and AI become woven into everyday life, debates about childhood often focus on risk, regulation, and harm. This one-day interdisciplinary workshop invites a different kind of conversation: not just how we protect children online, but how we think more ambitiously about the kinds of childhoods we should be seeking to sustain and cultivate as society becomes ever more digitally mediated. The day will begin with a framing lecture on childhood flourishing, before moving into three thematic panels exploring core dimensions of children’s lives in digital contexts:
- Relationships — How digital environments reshape children’s social worlds, intimacy, and belonging
- Play — What play looks like in platformised and algorithmic environments
- Creativity — How digital tools expand, constrain, or transform children’s creative agency
The workshop will conclude with a forward-looking session, identifying key questions and research directions emerging from the panels.Designed to be reflective and conversational, the event will provide space for interdisciplinary exchange and collaborative thinking.
