A Day in Masonry

AIBC-accredited masonry education covering design, performance, and envelope systems for commercial and multi-family projects.
About this Event

The program brings together four sessions focused on how masonry systems are designed, specified, and applied in practice. The emphasis is on real-world performance and how these systems perform once built.

Topics include brick aesthetics and layout, adhered masonry in multi-storey applications, sustainable concrete systems, and strategies for managing moisture and movement. Each session is structured to provide practical guidance that can be applied directly to current and future projects.

Reserve your spot. Capacity is limited.

Why Attend

Masonry systems are often selected early but their performance depends on how they are detailed and applied. This session focuses on bridging that gap, with practical guidance you can use directly in design and specification.

Agenda

🕑: 10:00 AM
Brick Esthetics (Full and Thin)
Host: Julie Schmidt, Endicott Brick

Info: This session explores how brick size, shape, and proportion influence the overall character and perception of a building. It covers both full and thin brick applications, with a focus on how designers can use variation in format to achieve different architectural outcomes. The session then moves into patterning strategies, showing how bond patterns and layout decisions introduce movement, rhythm, and visual interest across a façade. A review of brick arches and their modern applications highlights how traditional elements are being used in contemporary design. The session concludes with real-world examples from global projects, demonstrating how brick can be used to create distinctive and lasting architectural expression.

🕑: 12:00 PM - 01:00 PM
Design of Adhered Masonry Veneers for Multi-Storey Buildings (Lunch included)
Host: Dr. Mark Hagel, Alberta Masonry Council

Info: Adhered masonry veneers are increasingly used in commercial and multi-family construction, particularly in multi-storey applications and over exterior insulation systems. This session presents findings from shear and tensile bond testing of various mortar and adhered stone combinations commissioned by the Alberta Masonry Council. It translates those findings into practical design guidance, outlining where adhered systems are appropriate and where additional caution is required. Specific attention is given to installations exceeding 3 metres in height and assemblies with insulation greater than 38 mm. The goal is to equip designers with a clearer understanding of performance limitations and best practices to support safer, more reliable installations.

🕑: 01:30 PM
Sustainable Concrete
Host: Paul Schene, Shouldice Stone

Info: This session examines concrete masonry veneer as a durable, low-maintenance cladding solution suitable for a wide range of architectural styles. It covers the design flexibility available through variations in colour, size, and texture, allowing for both traditional and contemporary applications. A key focus is on newer installation methods, including mechanically fastened systems using stainless steel clip technology that is CCMC approved. These systems offer alternative approaches to installation with potential benefits in speed, consistency, and long-term performance. The session provides a practical overview of available systems and how they can be applied in current building design.

🕑: 03:00 PM - 04:00 PM
Moisture and Movement, Not an Issue for Brick Veneer
Host: Julie Schmidt, Endicott Brick

Info: This session focuses on the performance of brick veneer systems in managing moisture and accommodating movement over time. It begins with an overview of common issues such as efflorescence, spalling, mold, corrosion, staining, and cracking, along with the underlying causes. The session then outlines strategies to reduce water penetration, including the application of the 4Ds (deflection, drainage, drying, and durability), proper use of air and vapor barriers, flashing, and detailing. Brick veneer is examined as a rainscreen system, with emphasis on venting and long-term durability. The session concludes with guidance on designing for movement to minimize cracking and maintain performance over the life of the building.
