Water and Rock: A Study on Fluidity and Rigidity
Choreography by Leanna Fodor
A piece exploring the interplay between concepts of rigidity and fluidity as they relate to personal growth and self actualization.
A note from the choreographer:
As someone who has dealt with OCD off and on my whole life, I was recently exposed to a concept that though sounding obvious now, presented a very crucial shift in my comprehension of it. A couple weeks ago, I found myself in Joshua Tree with some friends. The desert was vast and beautiful. The next day, a little while after we headed back home, I met some other friends at the ocean in Malibu. Despite OCD being quite the formidable dictator the past few weeks, I found myself feeling an almost religious sense of calm at this beach. I felt fluid and beautifully solid at the same time, and at a record breaking sense of acceptance and trust in myself and my life. I studied the waves and how they moved around or over the rocks. The next day, I saw my therapist and recounted these experiences. As life goes, I will not always feel this way. How can I come back to it? We talked about the concept of rigidity and fluidity– how they both come and go, similar to the waves. I then made a list of things that reminded me of rigidity and things that reminded me of fluidity, respectively. The most obvious of these were water and rock, hence the title of this piece. OCD is something that despite dealing with it my whole life, I seldom talk about. Furthermore, this idea of rigidity and fluidity in the context of OCD specifically was something I never had considered, as obvious as it now seems. I wanted to make this piece as a way to not only share this concept to others through my eyes, but also visualize and work through them in the realm of the physical. I have never made a piece about my experiences with OCD and to be able to share this concept and possibly help someone else move through their own challenges with any form of disordered thinking by finding this fluidity for themselves, is a dream.
