Building Partnerships between Academia, Community, and Government.
About this Event

This educational activity aims to inform investigators and clinicians, trainees and students, and the interested general public about Advancing Health Equity Research and building effective partnerships between academia, community organizations, and government bodies. The community-based organizations (CBOs) surveyed determined that the focus of this year's symposium was the greatest priority. The practice gaps highlight key areas the seminar aims to address: Social Determinants of Health (SDOH) issues affecting housing, mental health, and food security. Featuring invited speaker panel discussions, lunch networking, poster presentations, and a Zoom option.

Target Audience

The symposium addresses topics important to practicing providers, provider assistants, scientists, trainees, and community groups. With this aim in mind, the following groups are invited to participate in the symposium: healthcare professionals, community-based organizations (CBOs), researchers, and public health advocates to address key social determinants of health (SDOH) and explore actionable steps to create healthier communities.

Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Identify challenges in the intersectionality of SDOH factors and their cumulative impact on community health.
  • Identify 1-2 actionable steps to improve collaboration and resource allocation among healthcare systems, public health advocates, and CBOs.
  • Highlight effective strategies currently in place to address these challenges.
  • Uncover gaps and under-addressed areas that need greater attention.
  • Learn from CBOs' unique perspectives and proven practices in addressing SDOH challenges.

About TRANSPORT - The Translational Program of Health Disparities Research Training (TRANSPORT)recruits and trains health equity researchers from underrepresented groups in biomedical sciences. Through TRANSPORT, Downstate has expanded its research training programs focused on unraveling and addressing the pressing health disparities prevalent in Brooklyn communities. TRANSPORT also seeks to ameliorate the โ€œdomestic helicopter researchโ€ phenomenon. This term refers to a practice where researchers from outside communities (in our situation, academic entities) conduct studies in lower-resourced communities with little involvement of local researchers or community members.
