Femi Kuti & The Positive Force
Throughout his prolific career, Femi Kuti has stood as a powerful voice for justice, carrying forwardthe revolutionary Afrobeat legacy pioneered by his father, Fela Kuti. Known for his unflinching critiques of political corruption and social inequality, Femi’s heady mix of funk, jazz and highlifehas always been a tool for resistance and change.
Femi began his career as a member of Fela's legendary band, Egypt ’80, and briefly stepped intothe role of frontman when his father was imprisoned on fabricated charges in 1984. In 1986 heleft to create his own band Positive Force, and has been forging his own style of Afrobeat eversince, adding doses of R&B, rock, and hip hop to the traditional Yoruba rhythms and jazzy horns.Lyrically, however, his focus has remained firmly on issues of power, oppression, and socialinjustice, and his activism has extended beyond music through collaborations with organizations like Global Citizen and his role as a UNICEF goodwill ambassador.
9th Annual Colorado Dashiki Festival featuring Femi Kuti & The Positive Force
Colorado African Cultural Center(CACC) is an NGO established in 2017 to empower the African and African American communities and to foster unity, diversity and inclusion between different communities in Colorado. We are committed to organizing events and campaigns that are centered around diversity, inclusion, and celebration of cultural heritage. We use entertainment, culture, food, music and art to bring people together. At CACC, we believe in using cultural engagement, education, and economic development as vehicles for transformation. We empower individuals with essential skills, networking opportunities, and resources for long-term success.
Our programs include Youth Empowerment & STEM Education (training in cybersecurity, AI, quantum computing, and mobile app development), Business Development & Financial Literacy (supporting small businesses and entrepreneurs), Career Development & Digital Training (covering Cloud Engineering, DevOps, AI/ML, Cybersecurity, and digital business equity), and Cultural & Community Engagement (celebrating African heritage through events and networking).
The Dashiki Festival is an African event that has been celebrated consecutively for 9 years now in Colorado. It is a dynamic cultural event designed in a way that celebrates all aspects of African heritage. Dashiki Festival features African music, cultural performances, African food, and arts with the highlight of an African fashion show. Everyone comes dressed in African attire and wearing African jewelry and prints, displaying their unique African attires with a chance to win awards for best dressed dashiki Queen of the year.
In 2023, CACC made the Dashiki Festival more accessible to the entire Colorado community by partnering with Levitt Pavilion Denver to make it free for all to attend. The festival is going to be entirely FREE and FAMILY-FRIENDLY. People of all ages, races, genders will be able to attend, regardless of their financial conditions, religious, nationality and political views or physical disabilities. By doing this, we hope to attract people from all over Colorado to come, celebrate and learn more about our culture.
With the legendary Nigerian project Femi Kuti & The Positive Force headlining the event, this festival is going to be the most vibrant and entertaining festival Colorado has witnessed. There will also be a variety of food, art and business vendor stands at the festival. The goal of the festival is to celebrate African people and their culture while increasing awareness about our culture and fostering unity, integration, diversity and inclusion between different communities in Colorado. The Dashiki Festival serves as a means of empowerment for our community demographics and businesses in Colorado.
