About this Event
50 YEARS OF SLADE IN FLAME
To celebrate the paperback publication of the much-acclaimed Whatever Happened To Slade? its author Daryl Easlea and legendary Slade drummer Don Powell reprise their double-act from last year and discuss Slade In Flame, the group's controversial motion picture that more-or-less ended their spell as Teenybop heroes.
Followed by a booksigning with Don and Daryl and a screening of the film itself.
What a way to spend your Friday night!
DON POWELL was the power house drummer for Slade for over 50 years. He is a firm friend and firm favourite of Louder Than Words Festival, who regularly use the phrase 'Be More Don' when times demand calm and positivity!
Slade achieved 6 UK number one singles and 3 UK number one albums in a chart career which continues to this day, thanks to their festive classic 'Merry Xmas Everybody', which last year celebrated its 50th anniversary, and charted once again.
Of course, it's well known that 'Slade Are For Life - Not Just For Christmas', and their entire back catalogue continues to be enjoyed by music fans worldwide, helped by the availability to listen digitally, and to purchase the music again on vinyl and on CD.
Today, Don Powell is as busy as ever, working with three of his very own bands, all of which have achieved recent success on the Heritage Chart (a contemporary music chart, hosted by broadcaster Mike Read. Songs are voted for by the public, and it features many well known and established artists).
'The Don Powell Band' has seen Don reunited with former Slade bandmate Jim Lea on their cover of 'My Sharona', which reached number one on the chart.
'Don Powell's Occasional Flames' is a project with poet Paul Cookson, and singer/songwriter Les Glover. In 2023 they released their own Christmas album, with the brilliant title 'Never Mind The Baubles'!
'Don & The Dreamers' is a collaboration with respected musicians from Denmark, where Don now lives with his wife, Hanne.
DARYL EASLEA has been part of the Louder family since 2013, and through the years has been able to discuss his books on CHIC, Peter Gabriel and Decca Records; and be part of panel discussions on The Fall and Pink Floyd. He once tried to persuade and audience that included people who worked at Malcolm McLaren's SEX shop and others who founded Rough Trade that Prog was better than Glam, while wearing a cape.
His most recent book Whatever Happened To Slade? (Omnibus Press) was a 2023 Sunday Times Book of the Year, and is at #Louder2024 to celebrate its paperback edition.
He has also just taken on the editorship of Record Collector's Rare Record Price Guide (Diamond) and this, the 18th Edition is out this November. This year, he's going to talk about both and DJ in the bar on Saturday night as well.
He is also locked in competition with John Robb to see who can get most airtime on Channel 5.
