Fourteenth seed Leonel Escote bagged the championship in the recently concluded 3rd leg of MCC Invitational Standard Training Games held over the weekend at Starmall Edsa Shaw in Mandaluyong City. The 21-year-old Escote, who drew his last round with top seed FM Randy Segarra in the final round, posted the highest total output of 6.5 points after seven rounds of play, to win the top prize worth P5,000 plus a gold medal in this two-day event organized by the Metropolitan Chess Center, the longest chess association in the country and supported by Milo, the country’s No. 1 energy drink.
The draw, dropped Segarra in a tie for 2nd - 5th places, along with John Lee Antonio, Jester Sistoza and Walt Allen Talan, with six points apiece. Breaking the tie, Segarra landed in 4th place, while Antonio grabbed the second honor. Sistoza and Talan took the third and fifth places respectively.
For their feats, they received the following cash prizes plus medals: Antonio - P3000 plus a silver medal, Sistoza - P2000 plus a bronze medal, Segarra – P1500 plus a bronze medal and Talan – P1000 plus a bronze medal.
Rounding off the top ten winners who received P750 each plus bronze medal were as follows: Cyril Felrod Telesforo (6th place); Daniel John Lemi (7th place); Andrew James Toledo (8th place); Jose Carlo Castro (9th place); and Almwayne Magpusao (10th place).
On the other hand, the seven category performers who were awarded special cash prize of P750 each plus gold medal were as follows: Arnel Ellis (top senior); Francis Talaboc (top adult); Gene Kenneth Estrellado (top provisional adult); Checy Aliena Telesforo (top junior- female); John Matthew Alvarado (top junior-male); Caleb Royce Garcia (top kiddie - 12 years old & above); and Enzo Patrick Castillo (top kiddie- 8 years old & below).
MCC Tee-shirts were given away to all participants and Milo products to those who did not win cash prizes.
