Join us for the 49th Annual Gannon Writing Awards Night featuring Distinguished Poet Matthew Shenoda. This event is free and open to the public. The evening will begin at 7:30 p.m. in Yehl Ballroom, Waldron Campus Center.Matthew Shenoda, Distinguished Poet, is the author of several books including "The Way Of The Earth, Bearden's Odyssey: Poets Respond to the Art of Romare Bearden, Tahrir Suite, Seasons of Lotus, Seasons of Bone and Somewhere Else." He is the recipient of the 2015 Arab American Book Award, 2006 American Book Award, California Arts Council Fellowship, Lannan Foundation Residency, and Hala Maksoud Award for Emerging Voice. He is a former assistant provost for equity and diversity and faculty member in the School of Critical Studies at the California Institute of the Arts; professor in the School of Fine & Performing Arts at Columbia College Chicago, where he also serves as the Dean of Academic Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.
This event will also include an afternoon seminar called "The Ekphrastic Impulse," from 3 to 3 p.m. in Palumbo Academic Center. This workshop will explore several poetic styles and approaches that respond to and work with art of differing mediums. From paintings, to photos, to sculptures, the class will examine examples of ekphrastic poetry, and each participant will create their own poem(s) engaging a work of art that inspires them.
