About this Event

3 Day Workshop with Butoh Master Hiroko Tamano

Friday June 12th, 5-8pm AUDITORIUM

Saturday June 13th, 1-4pm AUDITORIUM

Sunday June 14th, 1-4pm AUDITORIUM

Our Mythology is a message from our past to the future generation. Inspiration, making us move and dance, defines our shape. This three day workshop with butoh master, Hiroko Tamano, invites you to bring your own butoh. Your dance is guided by your lineage, your ancestors and the rediscovery of the self.

Your butoh is the temple in which the shapes teach of the mythology of the self. The collection of our collective past will become stories that will be told in the fall at a three day butoh festival. The three day butoh festival in the fall will challenge our current mythology rediscovering the eclectic state of the human experience.

For decades, the Tamanos’ workshops in Berkeley, CA have been known for a holistic approach to a dance that originated with sincerity, sympathy, and care. This is a rare opportunity to work with butoh master Hiroko Tamano, who was among the first to perform Hijikata’s Ankoku butoh, the “dance of darkness.” (https://dancersgroup.org/2023/01/put-yourself-on-the-beam/)

The images produced in the workshop will be the seeds that grow into a three day butoh gathering this fall. Dancers will collectively produce a festival directed by Hiroko Tamano at the Electric Lodge in Venice, CA.*

*Butoh festival is scheduled for this fall: Oct. 30 , 31 , & Nov. 1

All experiences welcomed. Keep up to your body's ability.

Hiroko Tamano

Born in Fukuoka prefecture in Japan, Hiroko entered Butoh founder Hijikata Tatsumi's studio in 1972. Her partner Koichi Tamano's performance in 1976 was the first appearance of Butoh in the United States. She received a lifetime achievement award for her work in Butoh this year and continues to teach, choreograph, and perform today. Koichi and Hiroko Tamano were among the very first to perform Ankoku Butoh, which translates literally to “the dance of darkness.” The genre emerged in the late 1950s in post-atomic bomb Japan. It was created by two dancers, Kazuo Ohno and Tatsumi Hijikata, who sought to create a new, uniquely Japanese form of expression that completely rebelled against the Establishment, and both Eastern tradition and Western styles.

Koichi joined Hijikata’s dance company in the 1960s, as did Hiroko in 1972. Hijikata encouraged the Tamanos to introduce Butoh to the United States. The Tamanos performance in the 1976 “Japan Now” exhibition at SFMOMA was the first Butoh seen by an American audience and made a big sensation. The Tamanos moved their dance company Harupin-Ha from Tokyo to Berkeley, California in 1979 with the blessings and encouragement of their teacher. For decades the Tamanos led dance workshops in Berkeley and also operated the restaurants Country Station and Tamasei, which served as meeting places for the dance and theater communities of the Bay Area. They are known for their holistic approach to the art of Butoh. The Mayor of the City of Berkeley, California declared March 28, 2017 the “Koichi and Hiroko Tamano Day.”
