The time has come to once again polish the champagne flutes for the German Society’s annual Stiftungsfest. We hope you’ll join us in raising a glass to the German Society’s long history and traditions, as well as its bright and sparkling future. Whether assisting new arrivals to America’s shores or building bridges between Philadelphia’s diverse communities today, the German Society’s mission to foster understanding between peoples is a cause worth celebrating.
On Saturday, November 2, 2024, we will commemorate the founding of the Society with our 260th Annual Stiftungsfest. We invite you to join us in the Horner Memorial Library for a champagne reception at 6:00pm, followed by dinner and dancing to live music in the elegant Barthelmes Auditorium at 7:00pm.

2024 Stiftungsfest Leadership Award Recipient: Stephan Grupp, MD PhD
Stephan Grupp is an internationally recognized pediatric oncologist and researcher. He is chief of the Cellular Therapy and Transplant Section and Medical Director of the Cell and Gene Therapy Lab at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. Dr. Grupp leads the largest pediatric cell therapy program in the country, a group which celebrated treating their 500th CAR T patient in 2023.

Dr. Grupp's primary area of research is the use of CAR T and other engineered cell therapies in pediatric cancers and other life-threatening disorders such as sickle cell disease. His research led to the first FDA approval of a CAR product. Grupp made international headlines in 2012, when he treated six-year-old Emily Whitehead, who was dying of leukemia. Emily became the first pediatric patient to receive CAR T-cell therapy. She's been cancer-free for over ten years, and now attends the University of Pennsylvania.
Dr. Grupp is the child of German immigrant parents who values his German heritage as a first generation American.
