We are thrilled, honored & humbled that beautiful San Diego has been chosen as the recipient city of the 24th International Sons of the Desert convention! It will be held at the Legacy International Hotel, Resort and Spa from Sunday, June 21, 2026-Thursday, June 25, 2026. The property is located at 875 Hotel Circle South in the West Mission Valley area of San Diego, California.
As we are still putting our noses to the grindstone and for the meticulous care with which we have executed our finely formulated machinations in extricating us from this devastating dilemma, we are putting the final touches on our convention itinerary to put our best foot forward. Please note that any part of this itinerary is subject to change...
Sunday, June 21, there will be opening registration, an informal mixer with cash bar, & hors d oeuvres, & the Parade of Tents. We will open up the Cliff Sawyer Dealer’s Emporium & the Irv Hyatt/Dave Wyatt Cinema Room for the first, but not only time. They will be open periodically throughout the convention. Plus, author’s presentations from noted historians and much, much more…
On Monday, June 22, we want to show off some of this fabulous city of San Diego by going coach to Historic Old Town, the USS Midway Naval Carrier & Museum and we will enjoy a dinner cruise out in the bay; the literal Saps at Sea cruise!
On Tuesday, June 23, we have more special author’s presentations from noted historians, fun & games with lunch provided, the Cliff Sawyer Dealer’s Emporium & Hyatt/Wyatt Cinema Room, capped by a fabulous film show in the 500 seat theatre on the hotel property! Our own Russ Peck, a long time professional silent film accompanist, will play the silent portion of the program & much, much more…
On Wednesday, June 24, we'll have even more author’s presentations by noted historians, the Cliff Sawyer Dealer’s Emporium & Hyatt/Wyatt Cinema Room, the traditional Dwain Smith Master Quiz & the Grand Council Meeting. We will close this day with our traditional banquet, with live vintage/authentic period music by the fabulous Dean Mora Orchestra & salute to ALL Veterans.
On Thursday, June 25, we will have our farewell brunch, awards ceremony & final goodbyes. We are going now…
We are offering FULL Passes, DAY Passes for each day of the convention, and EVENT Passes for selected events. We will have tickets for each of the evening events. This allows for extra people to come in, experience a piece of the convention, and helps fill the coffers! Dean Mora has a longtime loyal following of jazz and dance enthusiasts, which bodes well. For the film show, we really want to throw open the doors for the general public. Exposing people to the magic of Stan and Ollie is what it's all about!!
We will give you as wonderful a four days as we can, but the success rests with you all! We are always looking for donations, sponsors from everywhere & volunteers from the delegation!
Finally, our theme will be A Centennial tribute, 1926/2026, the 100th anniversary of Laurel and Hardy working together at the Hal Roach Studios! Our convention will be dedicated to the loving memory of our 20 year Grand Shiek, John Field.
