In 2026, we celebrate the 21st Anniversary of the declaration of Emancipation Day as a District holiday. You don't want to miss this event!
About this Event

DC Emancipation Day marks the signing of the Compensated Emancipation Act on April 16, 1862, which freed over 3,000 enslaved people in Washington, D.C. It was the first major act of emancipation in the U.S., ahead of the Emancipation Proclamation.


2026 will be the 21st year of celebrating an official City holiday, featuring parades, reenactments, and cultural events honoring African American history. It’s a time to reflect on the fight for freedom and equality.

You are invited to join for a day-long of family friendly events, a look back to history and celebrations, including:


1:00 pm - Franklin Park Festival Grounds Open

The festival grounds at Franklin Park (1332 I St NW) will have music, food, and entertainment for all ages until 8:30 pm.


1:30 pm - 21st Anniversary Parade Begins

With a stellar parade featuring community groups, bands and entertainers.

Starting point:14th Street NW and New York Ave

Ending Point: Franklin Park


2:00 pm - Emancipation Day Concert

A magnificent concert with world renown talent.


8:15 pm - Grand Finale

The event closes out with a grand finale, marking the end of Emancipation Day 2026!
