Spring Plant Sale at Prairie Fruits Farm May 9-10 | 10am-4pm | Free to attend We're partnering with two exceptional women-owned farms for a plant sale worth clearing your weekend for.
Meadow Lane Farm and The Shire of Illinois have spent months curating a collection of over 300 varieties of heirloom vegetables, fruits, herbs, and flowers -- selected for flavor, resilience, and the kind of stories that make gardening interesting again. No neonicotinoids. Grown under solar-powered lights. Unusual varieties chosen intentionally to perform well as our seasons grow less predictable.
What you'll find:
Tomatoes, peppers, onions, leeks, brassicas, celery, kale, herbs, cottage garden flowers, and limited fruit varieties for home gardens. Prairie Fruits Farm will also have herbs and vegetables available.
A few things worth looking for:
Dalle Khursani -- a pepper from the Himalayas with bold, tangy heat and deep cultural roots in Nepalese cooking. One of many peppers in this sale selected for flavor and story, not just heat level.
Cardinal Basil -- striking burgundy stems, anise-scented leaves, and deep red-purple blooms. As useful in a vase as in the kitchen.
Cuor di Bue Albenga -- a Ligurian oxheart tomato with dense, meaty flesh and almost no seed pockets. The kind of tomato that makes a simple salad feel like something special.
Blue Diadem Cornflower -- edible, intensely blue, with a mild clove-like flavor. Beautiful in the garden and on a plate.
Violaceo di Verona -- a rare Italian savoy cabbage from Verona with violet-tinged leaves that deepen in cold weather. A stunning late-season variety.

We're grateful to Kelly Lay of Meadow Lane Farm (and our own Farm Educator!) and Becky Howell of The Shire of Illinois for bringing this to Prairie Fruits Farm. These are people who care deeply about what they grow and why. It shows.
See you in the garden. 🌱
