About this Event

Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) invites you to join us for an in-person lecture by our 2025 CHOP Urology Visiting Professor, Earl Y. Cheng, MD. Dr. Cheng travels to Philadelphia from Ann & Robert Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago to be our 33rd Visiting Professor. This CME/CE event is hosted by the Division of Urology at CHOP and the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania.

Dr. Cheng received his Bachelor of Science degree from Northwestern University and his medical degree from the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. He completed his urologic training at Northwestern University, then his fellowship at Children’s Memorial Hospital.

Dr. Cheng has dedicated the past 29 years to Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, where he serves as a Founders’ Board Professor of Urology. He is also the Chief of Pediatric Urology at Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital. A highly respected leader in his field, Dr. Cheng has held numerous prestigious roles, including Chair of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) Section on Urology, Course Director of the Society for Pediatric Urology (SPU) Disorders of Sex Development (DSD) Master Course and Chair of the Professional Advisory Council for the Spina Bifida Association of America. Additionally, he has contributed to several guideline, task force and examination committees, further shaping the field of pediatric urology.

Dr. Cheng’s career interest in spina bifida, bladder reconstruction and management of vesicoureteral reflux has driven outstanding basic science and clinical research projects, earning multiple NIH grants. His work has helped lead the discussion around optimizing management of the neurogenic bladder, improving surgical outcomes for neurogenic bladder patients, working towards tissue engineering and managing complex hypospadias patients.

This activity has been designed for academic faculty, hospital medical staff, community physicians, residents, fellows and nurses.

Session Objectives

Upon completion of this program, the participants should be able to:

  • Describe the advantages and disadvantages of one-stage and two-stage repairs for proximal hypospadias.
  • Identify the specific surgical challenges that currently exist for the repair of proximal hypospadias.
  • Describe the current deficiencies in the use of urodynamics in the management of the neurogenic bladder in infants with spina bifida.
  • Identify the current challenges in the surgical management of the bladder neck in patients with a neurogenic bladder and incontinence.
