In Chicago, dyeing the river green is a cherished tradition that signals the start of St. Patrick's Day festivities. Starting in 1962 and continuing every year after, members of the Journeymen Plumbers Local Union 130 gather to dump gallons of green dye into the Chicago River, transforming it into a vibrant shade of emerald. The spectacle is an iconic part of Chicago’s yearly celebration and has even sparked similar traditions in other cities.

This year, the river dyeing will take place on the Saturday before St. Patrick’s Day on March 15th, starting at 10:00 am. The dye used is plant-based, temporary, and completely safe for wildlife.

How Does the River Turn Green?

The Chicago Journeymen Plumbers Local Union 130 carries out the dyeing process a tradition that has been passed down through generations. Using 40 pounds of vegetable-based environmentally safe dye teams aboard several boats release and mix the color into the water ensuring that the river turns a bright and vivid emerald green. The dyeing process starts at 10:00 AM covering a major stretch of the river from Columbus Drive to Orleans Street.

How Long Does the Green Last?

The vibrant green color remains in the river for several hours and depending on weather conditions it can last up to a day or two before gradually fading.
