Join us on Thursday, March 5 at 6:30pm for the 2025-2026 Centre on Aging and Health's Distinguished Public Lecture!
Dr. Sally Chivers (Trent University) will deliver her lecture, "Don't Panic! It's Just Aging." at the Education Auditorium (EA 106), Main U of R campus.
We’re surrounded by messages that tell us to fear getting old. It’s tempting to reassure ourselves by staying active, planning well, and building good connections. These are all very helpful steps to take. But what if we thought about it differently? Drawing from her podcast, Wrinkle Radio, that blends academic insight with personal storytelling, Professor Sally Chivers will explore how fearmongering about grey hair and demographic bulges gets in the way of a meaningful public conversation about understandable fears of growing old. The talk will get to the heart of what can be scary about aging, and why there’s no reason to panic.
Dr. Sally Chivers is Full Professor of Gender & Social Justice and Past Director of the Trent Centre for Aging & Society. Her award-winning research on the social and cultural politics of aging ignites conversations that resonate in both academic and public spheres, earning attention from outlets such as The New Yorker, The Guardian, The Globe and Mail, and CBC’s The Current. Her books, alongside dozens of articles, chapters and short films, amplify the often-overlooked contributions of older adults and people with disabilities. Through her scholarly podcast Wrinkle Radio Dr. Chivers reveals how the stories we tell about aging and disability shape, and can even transform, the social and cultural structures that govern our lives.
Admission is free.
