About this Event
Plogging refers to the act of picking up trash while running. The expression stems from the combination of the Swedish term "plocka upp" meaning "to pick up" and the English term “jogging”. This activity will introduce new movements into your run while helping clean up our planet.
Come join New York Road Runners on Friday, November 1 for a 2-mile plog shakeout. This year, we are excited to be joined by our inaugural NYRR Team for Climate: a group of dedicated runners who have committed to aiding NYRR on its journey toward Net Zero by helping to reduce the carbon footprint of the 2024 TCS New York City Marathon. Joining us will be special guests Ginger Zee (Chief Climate Correspondent) and Tina Muir (environmental advocate and former elite marathoner). This exciting, new route will start from the NYRR RUNCenter featuring the NB Run Hub and finish at the iconic 2024 TCS New York City Marathon Finish Line in Central Park.
No plogging experience is required, and runners and walkers of all paces are welcomed.
NYRR will provide compostable bags and gloves to all registered ploggers. Restrooms and lockers (on a first come, first served basis) will be available. We will be plogging rain or shine, so please dress accordingly.
Can't make it on November 1? We still encourage climate activists in all parts of the world to join us from afar by plogging in their own hometowns to spread awareness and help clean up our planet. Tag us @nycmarathon, @nyrr and #TCSNYCMarathon to show off your plogging efforts!
About Ginger Zee:
Ginger has had a love of running since middle school but never had a chance to race as she has been chasing storms around the world as a meteorologist. Her “why” has evolved greatly over the years and being a conduit of climate science, and environmental change has become a major part of her coverage. Ginger is focused on consuming less of everything, except movement. Running has been a huge part of her mental health journey so a plogging jaunt to pick-up litter is the perfect way to mesh all of Ginger’s favorite subjects.
About Tina Muir:
As a mother of two and an elite marathoner, Tina aims to inspire change through running. She is the founder and CEO of Running for Real, a podcast that encourages runners to be brave and leave their comfort zones to address the climate emergency. She believes in running as a vehicle for social change.
She is also the author of “Becoming a Sustainable Runner”, a practical guide for runners of all abilities and backgrounds who want to take meaningful action to protect our planet through their love of the sport.
