Inaugurated in 1976, the lecture, given annually, provides an opportunity for a senior theologian to present on a theological or philosophical topic of their choice. An international event, to date three continents, have been represented.
'The liturgy after the liturgy: a Russian approach to social theology in the mid-20th century’
Maria Skobtsova (1891-1945), poet and political exile, developed a unique ministry in Paris with refugees and destitutes, and was eventually killed by the Nazis because of her active support for French Jews. In the 20's and 30's, she wrote extensively on the theological foundations of Christian social engagement as a "liturgical" expression of Christian identity rather than just a moral decision or obligation. She is increasingly recognized as one of the most idiosyncratically creative thinkers of the Eastern Christian tradition in recent times.
After the lecture, Dr Williams will introduce his Candles in the Dark: Faith, Hope and Love in a Time of Pandemic (2020), followed by Q&A at 17.15 pm-17.45 pm
