A celebration of the creative heights Benjamin Britten scaled while living in North America in 1939-42, plus music by his friend Aaron Copland and Brooklyn housemate Paul Bowles.Brittens dazzling, sensuous settings of French poet Rimbaud in Les Illuminations, sung by the internationally celebrated, Norwich-raised soprano Elizabeth Watts, are paired with the vigorous Young Apollo for piano and strings.
We also hear the sound of 1940s America in the works of Britten’s friend and mentor in New York, Aaron Copland – the ballet music Appalachian Spring and the Clarinet Concerto, originally written for Benny Goodman and performed here by BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artist Oleg Shebata-Dragan.
