The 100th Michigan State Medical Society Alliance Annual Meeting

Date: May 29-31, 2026

Location:Grand Hotel, Mackinac Island, MI

Join our medical family on Mackinac Island for the Alliance’s Centennial Celebration! Activities are planned for the entire family with opportunities to connect with friends while “getting to know” Mackinaw Island, the historic Grand Hotel and our 100-year old organization!

Our engaging lineup of community leaders will speak about public health issues and uplifting access to medical education. Our keynote session will provide insight on how to build healthier tech habits with a complimentary copy of the book Childhood Unplugged. If you are attending virtually or would like to read the book in advance, a shipping option is offered.

Our efficient schedule hopes to bring a compact session of learning and engagement couched by flexible opportunities to connect with your medical family and explore the island!

Finally, thanks to the generous support of the MSMS Foundation, participating physicians will be offered CME credit for their participation— so bring the whole family along!

Stronger Connections, Healthier Tech Habits

Info: Please welcome author Katherine Martinko (Childhood Unplugged, The Analog Family Substack, Hold the Phone, coming November 2026) for a practical session on fostering children's healthy development in a digital world. Katherine will explore the effects of excessive screen use on children's mental health and well-being, offering guidelines and practical strategies for caregivers to set clear, healthy technology boundaries and emphasize face-to-face connections and independence. Caregivers will learn:
• Practical approaches for setting screen time limits
• Ways to support face to face interaction and meaningful connection
• Tools for talking with children about technology using simple, supportive scripts
This session provides clear guidance and actionable skills to promote balance, resilience, and stronger family connections in the digital age.

The ABLE Program as a Model for Access to Medical Education at Michigan State

Info: Explain the land-grant mission of Michigan State University and it how it forms the College of Human Medicine (CHM) commitment to accessible, community-based medical education. Describe CHM's mission and education philosophy, emphasizing service to Michigan's diverse and underserved populations. Identify key pathways to medical education access at CHM, including the Early Assurance Program (EAP) and the Advanced Baccalaureate Learning Experience (ABLE). Analyze the structure and design of the ABLE Program as a national model for promoting diversity, academic readiness, and equitable opportunity in medical admissions. Discuss the measurable outcome sand long-term impact of the ABLE Program on physician diversity, community health, and equity in medical education. Recognize the roles of membership, academic support, and individualized learning as essential strategies as essential strategies in improving retention and success for students. Evaluate the replicability of the ABLE Program.
