What does the sea sound like? Is it the steady rhythm of waves against a hull, the call of a boatswainβs whistle, or the lively tunes that once lifted spirits aboard Royal Navy ships? Waves of Music Orchestra invites families to discover the rich world of maritime sound through a musical experience.Led by Southern Music Project, this drop-in session brings together four professional musicians representing brass, woodwind, strings and keyboard. Visitors can try instruments for themselves, experimenting with how different tones, pitches and rhythms combine to create unique sounds. Through these demonstrations, families can learn how musicians use texture, timing and volume to tell stories, from the gentle lapping of waves to the powerful signals used aboard naval ships.
Throughout the day, the musicians perform as a live quartet, presenting sea-inspired pieces alongside well-known film themes. These performances illustrate how composers capture adventure, mystery and exploration at sea using only music. From deep, rolling notes that echo the oceanβs depths to bright, brassy calls that pierce the air like a naval signal, each performance highlights the connection between music and life at sea.
Set among the historic ships of the Dockyard, vessels that once sailed the worldβs oceans, the session combines music, maritime history and imagination. Families will see how sound has been essential to sailors for centuries, while also enjoying a relaxed, playful environment. Whether trying an instrument, listening to the live quartet, or learning how rhythm and melody can recreate the seaβs sounds, participants of all ages are invited to immerse themselves in this memorable experience.
