[EN] American folk guitar virtuoso and trailblaizer Sir Richard Bishop, a figure that left a big mark on the contemporary music world via the undercurrents, will be playing for the first time in Belgrade on April 4, in an event co-presented by Inverted Spectrum Records, Ring Ring Festival, and Pop Depresija. He will be playing selections from his latest acoustic album 'Hillbilly Ragas' (Drag City 2025) which is considered by some as the pinnacle of the musical world he created over the years by drawing on American avantgarde folk, Indian raga, flamenco, and Middle Eastern classical music. And if he's in the mood, we may hear familiar classic tunes from his psychedelic ethno punk trio Sun City Girls. The warmup and afterparty will be provided by various local and international figures of the Belgrade scene—to be announced soon—whose musical creations and activities owe to Richard Bishop's legacy in one way or another.

🟧 SIR RICHARD BISHOP
Richard Bishop was born in Saginaw, Michigan in 1960 and started playing the guitar at the age of 11. Together with his brother Alan Bishop and the drummer Charles Gocher they founded Sun City Girls in 1981 in Phoenix, Arizona, and also played in the band Paris 1942 which included the Velvet Underground drummer Moe Tucker.
Sun City Girls drew on a variety of underground musical streams of the USA, improvisation, performance art, and music from around the globe, music that had not yet been charted by the world music industry but which they experienced first-hand on their travels to Middle East and Asia. Another crucial inspiration for the Bishop brothers was their childhood memories of their grandfather, a Lebanese immigrant who played oud at family gatherings. In 2003, Bishop brothers founded Sublime Frequencies, a label dedicated to publishing authentic non-western music that did not conform to the aesthetics of the mainstream world music market and which helped popularize many genres from North Africa and South East Asia and artists such as Omar Souleyman and Baba Commandant.
Until Gocher's passing in 2007, Sun City Girls produced more than 50 albums and became a symbol of independent and transgressive music for many musicians and music enthusiasts worldwide. After Sun City Girls, Rick Bishop co-led several musical projects with his brother Alan and also founded the experimental rock band Rangda with the guitar player Ben Chasny (Six Organs of Admittance) and the drummer Chris Corsano, a heavyweight of the improvised music scene.
Rick Bishop began to record and perform under the moniker 'Sir Richard Bishop' in 1998, publishing his first album 'Salvador Kali' on John Fahey's label Revenant, and began to tour with the likes of Animal Collective, Bonnie Prince Billy, and Davandra Banhart. His solo guitar work is a distillation of impressions he collected on a mystical trail that stretches all the way from USA to South Asia, via Andalusia, North Africa and the Middle East, subjected to the structural freedom of the American avant-garde folk guitar school, presenting mastery, elegance and splendour as well as occasional bursts of savagery reminiscent of the psychedelic punk assaults of Sun City Girls.
Bishop is also an antiquarian bookseller specializing in the occult, esoterica and erotica.
