Since 2001, communities around the world have participated in Walk a Mile in Her Shoes®, the International March to Stop Rape, Sexual Assault, and Gender Violence. This meaningful event invites people to come together, raise awareness, and stand in solidarity with survivors of sexual violence.
The phrase “you can’t understand someone’s experience until you’ve walked a mile in their shoes” takes on a powerful meaning at this event. Participants, especially men, are invited to walk one mile in women’s high-heeled shoes as a symbol of empathy, reflection, and support. The walk helps spark important conversations about gender stereotypes, respect, and the role each of us can play in preventing violence.
Sexual violence affects people of every gender identity and background. It harms a person’s sense of safety, dignity, and well-being, and it is rooted in harmful attitudes and cultural norms that must be challenged. By coming together as a community, we can raise awareness, support survivors, and promote a culture where respect and safety are the expectation.
