Step into a story written in stone…
This event is the culminating point of an exhibition that celebrates the art behind the local children’s book A Discovery in the Rocks, a beautifully crafted non-fiction narrative inspired by North Otago’s fossil-rich limestone.
Blending science and storytelling, the book was created as an accessible and engaging resource for young readers—while inviting all ages to rediscover the wonder beneath their feet.
At the heart of the exhibition is the influence of local artist, farmer, and Vanished World founding member Burns Pollock, whose landscape watercolours shaped the visual direction of the book.
Alongside this, students from Duntroon Primary School bring their own imaginative interpretations of fossils and ancient sea creatures—created during special workshops and woven into the final artwork.
This is a collaborative project, bringing together local artists, scientists, educators, and young creatives to celebrate the unique geology of our region.
