At the Threshold of Shift》。
Project Fulfill Art Space is honored to present our first collaboration with emerging installation artist Kou Tak-Leong in the solo exhibition “At the Threshold of Shift”. Featuring three newly developed series of installations, the exhibition explores perceptual relationships between light, shadow, and rim. By shifting the angle and position of viewpoints, the reflection of light changes, the works initiate an observation through not only eyes but also bodily experience.
The exhibition officially opens on May 30th at 2 PM. An artist talk will be held on June 6th at 3–5 PM, featuring a conversation with cultural critic Roan Ching-Yueh, who will join the artist in discussing his creative practice and the development of the exhibition.
A ring of light, fractured shadows, and lines that never fully come into focus move through the space in different rhythms. Clarity and blur, brightness and dimness, thickness and thinness quietly change places. Everything seems to linger on the verge of recognition, and the viewer, by moving, pausing, and looking again, is slowly drawn toward something that has not yet settled into alignment.
Part of the exhibition grows out of observations of sunlight, shadow, and orientation. It is rooted in a kind of attention that asks for time: time for sunlight to fall into a well at a precise moment, time for the shadow of a tower to shift until a slight difference becomes visible. Position is never grasped all at once. It gathers gradually through waiting, through repetition, through the patient act of comparison. Light, shadow, and line remain compelling because they appear so briefly and so delicately. They leave traces that can only be felt when the body remains with them for a while.
For me, these works return to a simple but fundamental condition. Through standing, turning, approaching, and withdrawing, one slowly enters into relation with the world. In a time when so many things reach us with increasing speed, that process feels ever more fragile. What these works try to hold is not a fixed answer, but those moments that surface only when the body passes through them and time is allowed to deepen.
— Kou Tak Leong
Kou Tak-Leong’s practice focuses on light-related art, spatial installation, and landscape-based works. Often beginning with existing structure, circulation, and boundaries, his works embodied perception, material properties, and the changing conditions of light to re-examine the relationship between body and space. In Kou’s work, light is not merely an effect of illumination, but a means of measuring, locating, and sensing the world. Space, likewise, is not treated as a passive background but as a scene where experience gradually takes shape through the viewer’s movement, pause, and turning.
This exhibition continues his ongoing interest in light, shadow, orientation, and individual experience, and unfolds around the movement “Shift”. Light, shadows, lines continuously change between blur and clarity, viewers are encouraged to move through and pause within the space, gradually constructing their own relationship through the changes of distance and perspective.
At the entrance of the exhibition, the large-scale installation “The Vanishing Sunlight no.3” takes the form of an enormous ring of light constructed from optical materials. As viewers move around the work, shifting refractions and chromatic variations emerge, transforming viewing from a static gaze into an immediate perceptual experience. The work imitates the image of the sun while also functioning as a perceptual threshold between space and the body. By applying semi-arched optical acrylic panels with refractive properties to the surface of the work, the artist creates flowing layers of light and color that change according to the viewer’s angle. This also reflects his contemplation on the subjectivity of perception: even when facing the same object, each individual perceives it differently.
To the center of the gallery, “Foreseen” is developed in relation to the existing pillar within the space. Through digital simulation, the artist reconstructs the shadows cast by sunlight at different times of day and transforms them into physical installations on the floor. Shadows that would normally shift and disappear over time are here fixed in place, forming another pattern of revealing the intersection of time and space. The work also resonates with “The Vanishing Sunlight no.3”, pointing toward the relationships between the self, others, and celestial bodies, making the act of viewing a process of recalibrating one’s own position.
Another work, “By the Well”, employs subtle adjustments to the surface material, allowing refracted light to emerge in a gradual waxing from the edges until fullness. Rather than appearing or disappearing abruptly, the light gently moves inward from one side toward the center. The work is inspired by the fleeting moment when sunlight falls almost perfectly into a well at a specific time of year, allowing the abyss of the well to gradually reveal itself through light. This suspended state — between appearance and incomplete emergence — becomes the viewing experience the artist seeks to preserve.
The last work “Obscured Origin” disperses the space with linear fragments of optical material. From his experience with 3D modeling software, the artist reflects on the relationship between digital space and physical scale and transforms into a series of linear installations attached to planes and lines in the space. The blurred lines resemble hidden coordinates or subtle cues embedded within the space, redirecting attention toward edges and structures that often go unnoticed. They also remind us that our understanding of spatial scale continually oscillates between the virtual and the real, while the body serves as the most direct connection between the two.
“At the Threshold of Shift” does not seek to preserve a definitive conclusion, but rather those moments of perception that can only take form through bodily experience and the passage of time. Amid the rapid circulation of information and visual stimuli in current society, Kou Tak-Leong constructs, through light, shadow, and space, a slower and more contemplative manner of perception.
