What is an "Okinawa Minyo Sakaba (Folk song bar)"? When you think of local folk songs, some might imagine traditional regional performing arts or old songs that have been passed down for generations, but in Okinawa, they are much more closely integrated into local life. Some folk songs have been loved for a long time, while others are new songs that were created this year. Folk songs are still being created in Okinawa, and there is an ongoing tradition of people involved judging the many new songs that have appeared over the past year and awarding them the prestigious "Miiuta Grand Prize."
During Obon and Lunar New Year, local television stations gather together folk singers from all over the prefecture to air special programs such as the "Folk Song Red and White Song Battle." That's how strong the connection between Okinawans and folk music is.
Folk song bars allow you to hear famous folk singers perform up close, even those who appear on television. Not only that, but some establishments even allow customers to sing along with live music. It's a paradise for local folk music fans.
The above is an excerpt from "Traveling Keywords: Okinawa," published in 2008.

Ayumi Sakuraba
Okinawan Folk Singer/Sanshin Performer
Profile
Born in Yokohama and now based in Okinawa, Ayumi Sakuraba is a singer and sanshin performer who shares the heart of Okinawan minyo—the traditional folk music of the Ryukyu Islands. Her journey began during a trip to Okinawa, where she was moved by the distinctive melodies and the soulful resonance of the sanshin. This encounter led her to begin studying Okinawan music in 2011 and ultimately relocate to Okinawa in 2016 to deepen her connection with the culture and language.
Ayumi performs in the traditional style of singing accompanied by the sanshin. Though petite, she is known for her powerful yet sensitive voice—clear, graceful, and emotionally
expressive. She often gravitates toward songs inspired by nature, lullabies, and traditional teaching songs, delivering each piece with shifting colors of tenderness, sorrow, and
strength.
Ayumi is also active in cross-cultural collaborations, performing with artists from overseas as well as Indigenous musicians from Ainu communities and Taiwan’s Indigenous groups. In recent years, she has expanded into songwriting, creating works that blend the traditional Okinawan style with her own poetic sensibility.
Her music carries the spirit and stories handed down by the people of Okinawa, connecting past and present through sound.
