(NL) Met Ihsane vervolledigt choreograaf Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui het tweeluik dat hij in 2022 begon met Vlaemsch (chez moi), dat ook te zien was in DE SINGEL. Die voorstelling droeg hij op aan zijn moeder. Met Ihsane verkent Cherkaoui nu de relatie met zijn vader, die stierf toen hij een tiener was. Nadat hij hem vergeefs zocht op een overvol kerkhof in Tanger, zette hij de zoektocht verder in deze creatie voor het Ballet du Grand Théâtre van Genève. Zoals altijd brengt Cherkaoui een uniek artistiek team mee, even rijk en levendig als de regio van zijn voorouders. De Tunesische muzikant en viola d’amore-virtuoos Jasser Haj Youssef componeert de muziek en voert die op met de Marokkaanse zanger Mohammed El Arabi Serghini en de Libanese sterzangeres Fadia Tomb El-Hage.
Het Arabische woord ‘ihsane’ verwijst naar goedheid en verbondenheid met het universum, maar het is ook de naam van het eerste gekende dodelijke slachtoffer van homohaat in België. Cherkaoui herdenkt hem, en reflecteert met zijn dansers en musici over de oneindige cyclus van vernietiging en wedergeboorte. Over wat er overblijft wanneer onze thuis vervaagt. Op het podium van DE SINGEL onthult hij in een onwaarschijnlijk visuele, filmische en weelderige voorstelling, de onzichtbare draden die ons met elkaar verbinden. En die ons telkens weer naar zijn memorabele voorstellingen toe trekken.
(EN) With Ihsane, Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui completes the diptych that he began in 2022 with Vlaemsch (chez moi), which could also be seen at DE SINGEL. He dedicated this performance to his mother. In Ihsane, Cherkaoui now explores the relationship with his father, who died when he was a teenager. After searching for him in vain in an overflowing graveyard in Tangiers, he continued his quest in this creation for the Ballet du Grand Théâtre van Genève. As always, Cherkaoui brings along a unique artistic team, as rich and lively as the region of his ancestors. The Tunisian musician and viola d’amore virtuoso Jasser Haj Youssef composes the music and performs it together with the Moroccan singer Mohammed El Arabi Serghini and the Lebanese star vocalist Fadia Tomb El-Hage.

The Arabic word ‘ihsane’ alludes to goodness and connectedness with the universe, but is also the name of the first known fatal victim of homophobia in Belgium. Cherkaoui commemorates him, and with his dancers and musicians reflects on the endless cycle of destruction and rebirth. On what remains when our home fades away. On the stage of DE SINGEL, in an improbably visual, cinematic, and lush performance, he unveils the invisible threads that connect us to one another. And that continually draw us back to his memorable performances.
