A half-day workshop aimed at exploring deaths in police settings in Scotland.
About this Event

This in person only workshop brings together invited key stakeholders from academia, policing, third sector groups and government in a facilitated conversation about understanding and preventing deaths in police custody and after police contact. It will also explore the police role in investigating of deaths in custody in Scotland. It draws on data from a comprehensive five-year project monitoring deaths in all forms of state care and custody in Scotland (Nothing to See Here series), presented by researchers from the Scottish Centre for Crime and Justice Research (SSCJR).

This workshop is being supported through the knowledge exchange fund of the Scottish Institute for Policing Research.

Featured Speakers:

  • Professor Sarah Armstrong, Scottish Centre for Crime and Justice Research, University of Glasgow.
  • Dr Betsy Barkas, Scottish Centre for Crime and Justice Research, University of Glasgow.
  • Dr Andrew Wooff, Director, Scottish Institute for Policing Research, Edinburgh Napier University.

Interactive sessions will be structured to address three primary questions:

  1. What are the trends and patterns in police involved deaths in Scotland?
  2. What data and data practices would improve the understanding and support the prevention of such deaths?
  3. What are the latest developments in investigations of death in police and other settings of custody?

The session will be of interest to those involved in or with policy or oversight interest in the care of people in custody and deaths in custody, with a specific focus on policing contexts. This includes those with operational, research, policy or community roles.

Targeted invitations are being sent out to bring key stakeholders together but there is limited space for others interested in attending.
