On Saturday the 20th of April we’ll be celebrating the release of ‘envelope follower’, the new album by Messell.
‘envelope follower’ is an enormously dynamic work, where a little sound heard in the background suddenly grows larger and takes over the entire track, where one element’s sonic evolution affects the journey of other sounds. The music carries a melancholic depth and resides in a fluctuating drone between sorrow and hope.
Messell has let the properties of the sound sources affect each other in a kind of closed, generative system. The music has arisen in a matrix of LFO-carried chains, envelope followers, granular synths and side chains.
The evening will feature performances by Heva Vaupel, Nova Varnrable, Grammar of Movement, and Messell himself.
Heva Vaupel
Heva Vaupel is a composer and musician working with an expression equally inspired by classical music as contemporary pop. Heva has been affiliated with the Copenhagen based Janhushoved label since 2016 and has released multiple cassettes and played numerous shows under varying aliases and constellations.
Messell
Solipsistic emo-ambient. Martin Messell creates dynamic and emotionally charged sonic spaces, in which the different sonic elements affect one another, interacting in a sort of enclosed and generative feedback-loop. This evening's performance is built upon live variations of the compositions on Messell's new album "envelope follower".
Nova Varnrable
Nova Varnrable’s songs roam through a myriad of sounds, ranging from techno, soul and experimentalism. Waving together percussion, samples, live-instruments and vocals through a disparate collage of electronic production. In this visceral practice, Nova unravels their own experiences to ultimately unite the fragmented pieces of themselves— communicating their own duality and creating meaning to a state that once felt meaningless. “It’s my love for both the abnormal and the classic, a seeking towards an ephemeral state relieved of all expectations,” says Nova.
Grammar of Movement
Grammar of Movement is the primary moniker of Puyain Sanati, a DJ and musician based in Copenhagen. Spending the past few years honing his sound and technique, the Danish-Iranian producer has been on a musical journey with a willingness to experiment. His Azadi EP, released in 2016 and Plastic Games EP, released in 2020, has shown his ability to produce and incorporate eclectic styles and influences to his sound and movement.

Sanati joined the Escho family in 2021 with the release of Parallel Process. His first step into a world of more abstract soundscapes, using solely acoustic sources of sound such as piano, double bass, flute and cymbals in ambient and free movements, which he arrived at through guided improvisational sessions with different ensembles.

Sanati has lately been making his way back into his club productions and performing behind the decks in clubs. His work in the experimental field has made his approach to DJ’ing and playful and with his ability creating moments to play a diverse selection of styles makes his performances stand out.
Hope to see you there!
Love,
