In 2026, Alberta is at a crossroads. While technology can be helpful, many corporations are now using automated systems to replace paid human workers. At the same time, we are seeing a rise in "unpaid labour," where volunteers are expected to do work that should provide a steady paycheck for an Alberta family.
We believe in the Human Dividend—the unique value only a person can provide, such as empathy, accessibility, and real community connection. Efficiency is important, but it should never come at the cost of our neighbors' livelihoods. A machine cannot provide the soul or the support that a human worker can.
Our Goals
We are gathering at City Hall to send a message to the Government of Alberta. We are calling for provincial policies to:
Prioritize Paid Labour: Protect jobs from being phased out by excessive use of automated systems.
Stop "Unpaid Labour Creep": Ensure roles requiring skill and commitment remain paid positions, not volunteer tasks.
Ensure Accountability: Demand transparency from companies using technology to replace local workers.
Event Schedule
Location: Municipal Plaza Steps (City Hall)
1:00 PM – 2:00 PM | Gathering & Sign-Making: Join us early! We’ll have sign-making supplies ready and Tim Hortons coffee ☕️ for those who need a cup.
2:00 PM – 2:30 PM | Rally Begins: Opening remarks by Kavin—a call to action for the province to prioritize people over automated systems.
2:30 PM – 2:40 PM | Community Chants: Let’s make sure our message is heard inside and outside City Hall!
2:40 PM – 3:10 PM | The "Human Dividend" Wall: Share your story. How has automation or the loss of a paid role affected your life or your community?
3:20 PM – 3:50 PM | Petition & Letter Writing: We are collecting paper signatures for a formal petition to the Alberta Legislature. We will also be writing letters to our local representatives.
3:50 PM – 4:00 PM | Closing & Next Steps: How to stay involved and keep the pressure on our provincial leaders.
What to Bring
🤝 A Neighbour: Bring someone who cares about the future of work in Alberta.
📝 Your Signature: Help us reach our goal for the official petition.
🪧 A Sign: We will have supplies, but feel free to bring your own! Ideas:
People Over Pixels
A Machine Can’t Smile Back
Invest in Workers, Not Algorithms
Human Needs, Not Corporate Greed
Can’t make it? We will be hosting a live stream for those who want to support from home. Let’s stand together for the future of Alberta's workforce!
