Александр Плавин. Тишина, которая кричит: как радиоастрономия “видит” чёрные дыры

Александр Плавин – астрофизик, радиоастроном, исследователь черных дыр в Гарвардском университете.
Черная дыра сама по себе не видна, но пространство вокруг нее заполнено горячей плазмой, магнитными полями и частицами, разогнанными до околосветовых скоростей. Эта среда генерирует излучение в радиодиапазоне, которое можно зарегистрировать. Александр Плавин объяснит, как сфотографировать то, чего не видно, с помощью телескопа размером с Землю.
На лекции будут показны первые изображения тени черной дыры: что на них на самом деле изображено, почему светится только половина кольца и как это помогает понять, работает ли теория относительности Эйнштейна в космосе. Речь пойдет еще об одной загадке современной астрофизики: как из чёрной дыры вырываются джеты – мощные струи материи, улетающие в космос на миллионы световых лет.

Alexander Plavin. The Silence That Screams: How Radio Astronomy “Sees” Black Holes

Alexander Plavin is an astrophysicist and radio astronomer, a researcher of black holes at Harvard University.
A black hole itself is invisible, but the space around it is filled with hot plasma, magnetic fields, and particles accelerated to near-light speeds. This environment generates radiation in the radio range that can be detected. Alexander Plavin will explain how it is possible to photograph what cannot be seen using a telescope the size of the Earth.
The lecture will present the first images of a black hole’s shadow: what is actually shown in these images, why only half of the ring is glowing, and how this helps us understand whether Einstein’s theory of relativity works in space. The talk will also address another mystery of modern astrophysics: how jets – powerful streams of matter – escape from a black hole and travel millions of light-years into space.
