We are pleased to invite you to 'Omphalos', a solo exhibition by Celene E. Bridge.

In ancient mythology and archaeology, the Omphalos was a sacred stone placed at the earth’s navel, believed to be the cosmological and terrestrial centre of the world. There, an oracle served as a conduit of the gods, delivering divine prophecies and wisdom. Similarly, dreams have been considered as a means of receiving prophetic and profound messages, offering a direct connection to the secrets of the subconscious mind.
‘Omphalos’ is a convergence of dreams, myths and history, accentuating the significance of story-telling. The works explore the meeting place between the symbols of mythology and the psyche – recognising the lasting importance of these rich tapestries and of dreams in understanding ourselves and the world. The nocturnal imagination had a vital role in the shaping of mythology, religion, science and humanity, while the Greco-Roman mythos is woven through the cosmos, art and literature. With a fading understanding of these legends, the richness and depth of art, antiquity, and colloquiums may be misconstrued or rendered meaningless – an empty façade. Keeping alive the lore of lived experiences is essential, especially in an era of rampant propaganda and lies. The tales we are taught, and the stories we tell ourselves – both awake and asleep – are our lifelines to spiritual nourishment.

Celene E. Bridge is an autodidactic artist based in Western Australia. Working with oils and watercolours, her practice also includes stone carving and wood carving, favouring natural materials. Bridge completed courses in both lapidary and jewellery, and has a BA in Fashion and Textile Design. She has exhibited three solo shows, “Omphalos” in 2025, “Bright Tapestry” in 2022, and “The Fearmongered Beast and its Religion of Violence” in 2015. Bridge was a finalist in the Wildlife Art Museum of Australia’s Works on Paper Prize, and The Elaine Bermingham National Watercolour Prize, as well as a semi-finalist in the Doug Moran National Portrait Prize. Bridge lets the subject have influence over the material and outcome, with works oscillating between crucial expressions and meditations in intricacy. Guided by mythology, dreams and the natural world, fine detail – whether it be literal or symbolic – is an important aspect of her work.
