Zine-making class is coming BACK to SoMad! This workshop is designed for image makers who want to compile and distribute their work in a zine format. Participants will learn about the technical and creative aspects of zine-making, from sequencing and layout to printing and binding. Additionally, you'll have the opportunity to think critically about your images and how to curate and present them in a zine format that effectively communicates your intended narrative or theme. This workshop will be in two parts, held on Saturday, November 16th and Sunday, November 17th from 1 - 6pm. A basic knowledge of Adobe Suite, including InDesign and Photoshop, is recommended for participants.
For anyone newer to the land of zines: a zine (pronounced ZEEN) is a self-published, non-commercial publication, typically produced in small circulation. Zines have historically served as a platform for underrepresented groups, offering a sense of community and acting as a powerful tool for activism within social movements.
Instructors:
Patricia Voulgaris is an artist from New York who graduated in 2024 with an MFA from the Yale School of Art and received her BFA from the School of Visual Arts. Her work has been exhibited at the Aperture Foundation, Island Gallery, Baxter Street at CCNY, and the Silver Eye Center for Photography. She has also been featured in Der Greif, Vice Magazine, Dear Dave Magazine, The British Journal of Photography, New York Magazine, The New York Times, and The New Yorker. In addition to her exhibitions and publications, she is the recipient of the Lucie Foundation and Aaron Siskind Foundation grant as well as the Brooklyn Darkroom Traveling residency and Horse Island residency at Yale University.
Amina Gingold is a photographer, filmmaker, and bookmaker living and working in New York, NY. She graduated from the School of Visual Arts in 2020 with a BFA in photography and video. Recently, she completed the one-year Matte Institute Free School of Photography from 2023 to 2024. Her work has been screened and exhibited at Documenta Madrid, Mono No Aware, SoMad, Flat Earth Cinema, SVA Gramercy Gallery, Chinatown Soup, and 10 14 Gallery. This summer, she will be a resident of the Brooklyn Darkroom for their Traveling Art Residency. Her work focuses on gut instincts, misremembering, and the complications of uncovering the truth.
About SoMad:
Opened in 2018, SoMad is a femme and queer led, independent multidisciplinary art space with an artist residency program that fosters creative experimentation. A platform, production house and gallery, located South of Madison Square Park, the name “SoMad” refers both to the physical location of the space as well as the collective’s frustrat†ion with the current landscape for emerging artists, particularly for artists from underrepresented communities.
