Sculpture International Rotterdam en BKOR organiseren de 33e editie van Z-Files naar aanleiding van de recente onthulling van het gedenkteken (2025) van Narges Mohammadi. Dit kunstwerk op de Coolsingel vraagt aandacht voor vrouwen en meisjes die zich in een onveilige situatie bevinden, bevonden of gaan bevinden. Het beeld is gerealiseerd in opdracht van de gemeente Rotterdam in samenwerking met Sculpture International Rotterdam, naar aanleiding van de tragische moord in 2018 op de zestienjarige Rotterdamse scholiere Humeyra.
Deze editie van Z-Files neemt de onthulling van A Minute of Shelter als aanknopingspunt voor een dieper gesprek tegen de achtergrond van de actuele discussie over de veiligheid en zichtbaarheid van vrouwen in zowel de persoonlijke als de publieke ruimte. Vanuit artistieke en sociale praktijken en feministische kunst- en architectuurtheorie spreken we over de betekenis van beeldende kunst in dit verband. Hoe kan beeldende kunst in de publieke ruimte bijdragen aan het begrijpen van de positie van vrouwen in de stad? Hoe kunnen persoonlijke ervaringen en sociale structuren zichtbaar worden gemaakt?
Programma
De avond wordt geleid door schrijver, verhalenverteller en programmamaker Shantie Singh. Als creatief bestuurskundige voor de Gemeente Rotterdam zet ze zich onder meer in voor de bestrijding van geweld tegen vrouwen en was ze nauw betrokken bij de totstandkoming van A Minute of Shelter.
Vervolgens gaat journalist Wilke Martens in gesprek met kunstenaar Narges Mohammadi over de achtergrond en het maakproces van A Minute of Shelter.
Politiek filosoof en onderzoeker Catherine Koekoek richt zich in haar werk op de praktische en ruimtelijke voorwaarden voor democratie en sociale rechtvaardigheid. In haar lezing onderzoekt ze aan de hand van A Minute of Shelter hoe kunst een uiting kan zijn van verzet en ook ruimte kan maken voor onzichtbare verhalen.
Elke Krasny, hoogleraar Kunst en Educatie aan de Akademie der bildenden Künste Wien, richt zich in haar werk op care ethics: hoe maken zorg, feministische en queer-feministische perspectieven maatschappelijke en ecologische ongelijkheden zichtbaar? In haar lezing gaat ze dieper in op manieren waarop vrouwen ruimte (kunnen) innemen in de stad door middel van beeldende kunst.
We besluiten het programma met een gesprek tussen Narges Mohammadi, Shantie Singh, Catherine Koekoek en Elke Krasny, geleid door Amira Gad, conservator Moderne en Hedendaagse Kunst bij Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen en co-curator van Sonsbeek 2026.
Na het programma is er gelegenheid tot napraten in de bar van Kino.

Sculpture International Rotterdam and BKOR are organizing the 33rdedition of Z-Files in response to the recently unveiled memorial A Minute of Shelter (2025) by Narges Mohammadi. This artwork on Coolsingel demands attention for women and girls in unsafe situations, in the past, present, and future. The sculpture was commissioned by the Municipality of Rotterdam in collaboration with Sculpture International Rotterdam following the tragic M**der of the 16-year-old Rotterdam schoolgirl Humeyra in 2018.
Against the backdrop of recent discussions about the safety and visibility of women in both the private and public spheres, for this edition of Z-Files, A Minute of Shelter serves as the point of departure for a deeper conversation.Drawing on artistic and social practices as well as feminist theories on art and architecture we will discuss the significance of visual art in this context. How can visual art in the public space contribute to a better understanding of the position of women in the city? And how can we make personal experiences and social constructs visible?
Programme
The evening starts off with a contribution by writer, storyteller and programme creator Shantie Singh. As a creative public administration specialist for the Municipality of Rotterdam she is, among other things, committed to fighting violence against women, and she was closely involved in the realisation of A Minute of Shelter.
Journalist Wilke Martens subsequently talks to the artist Narges Mohammadi about the backgrounds and creative process of A Minute of Shelter.
Political philosopher and researcher Catherine Koekoek’s work focuses on the practical and spatial conditions for democracy and social justice.Informed by A Minute of Shelter, her lecture explores how art can be used as an expression of resistance as well as a space to tell stories that often remain hidden.
The work of Elke Krasny, who is Professor of Art and Education at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna, focuses on care ethics, i.e. how care, feminist and queer-feminist perspectives can uncover societal and ecological inequities. Her lecture is an in-depth examination of how women use, or might use, visual art to reclaim their space in the city.
We conclude the programme with a discussion between Narges Mohammadi, Shantie Singh, Catherine Koekoek and Elke Krasny, mediated by Amira Gad, curator of Modern and Contemporary art at Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen and co-curator of Sonsbeek 2026.
After the programme there is an opportunity to continue the conversation at the Kino bar.
