About the workshop
The Body That Knows Itself
In Butoh, a heightened sensitivity and the ability to seize a moment instantly are essential elements of the practice. Tatsumi Hijikata, the founder of Butoh, explored various methods to develop and refine the body's sensory awareness. However, Hijikata's approach can be difficult to analyze through words, and the nuances of his teachings can be hard to communicate across different languages and cultures.
Yuko Kawamoto has studied and analyzed Hijikata’s Butoh and developed a method that makes these teachings accessible to all. She focuses on training the body to "stand in crisis"—a concept derived from Hijikata’s work that emphasizes the importance of physical and emotional readiness in the face of intense moments.
Kawamoto’s method encourages individuals to connect with their own unique bodily experience, using it as a foundation for refining personal technique and expanding expressive range. In Butoh, where the individual’s physicality and life experience are key, this training offers an invaluable opportunity to deepen one's practice and technique.
