The YMCA Youth Employment & Skills Strategy (YESS) Program aims to provide youth 15 -30 years old in the Hamilton and Flamborough areas to overcome barriers in finding employment.
The YESS Program assists newcomer and rural youth in overcoming barriers to employment through participation in our eight-week paid pre-employment and skills development in class training followed by paid eight-week work experience placements.
The eight-week Skill Development Training is designed to educate and prepare participants to overcome barriers and challenges in securing work. The in-person workshops are paid, run Monday – Thursday, 9:30 AM– 3:00 PM (20 hrs / week), up to 160 hours for eight-weeks consecutively. This paid in-class training will be in YMCA @ 500 Dury Lane, Burlington, ON.
Eligibility:
To participate in the Youth Employment and Skills Strategy Program, individuals must be:
· between the ages of 15 and 30 (inclusive) at the start of the intervention
· Canadian citizens, permanent residents, or protected persons as defined by the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act
· legally entitled to work in Canada
· legally entitled to work according to the relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulationsThere are no exceptions to these criteria.
Suitability:
· Minimum English – Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) Level of 5
· Requiring Literacy, Pre Employment and Skills Development to attain employment
· Ability to attend Employment Skills Development Workshops for 8wks, 20 hrs/week
· Limited Work Experience· Looking for full time work (30 hours per week of employment)
· Out of school - High School, College, University
· Low-income measure-based thresholds (LIMs) - OW, ODSP, No Income

Important Note:
- Ability to attend Employment Skills Development Workshops for 8 weeks, 20 hrs/week from 9:30am to 3:00pm Monday to Thursday. This is in-person in Burlington YMCA. Please make sure they you are fine to take the bus in Burlington YMCA @ 500 Drury Lane, Burlington, ON every day for 8 weeks for the workshops.
- Out of school - meaning not in high school, college or university
- Jobless or not working for any part-time or full-time job
- Upcoming cohort start dates – Cohort 6 to start on June 22 to August 14
- Any other details to help support successful applications – after the 8 weeks in-class workshop is an 8 week job placement
