June 29-30, 9 AM-3 PMExplore Japanese art and folklore in this special two-day mini camp led by Mika Usuki. In Japan, the fox—or Kitsune—is believed to be a mystical messenger of Inari, the deity of harvests and prosperity. These iconic fox masks are often seen at shrines and festivals, symbolizing protection, transformation, and good fortune.
Over two days, students will learn about the cultural meaning behind Kitsune masks while creating their own using a traditional paper layering technique. Campers will begin by shaping a fox face mold and applying layers of Hanshi (Japanese calligraphy paper) to build a lightweight yet durable mask structure.
Once the paper has dried, students will remove the mold and paint their masks, choosing between traditional red-and-black Kitsune patterns or developing their own creative designs inspired by Japanese art and symbolism.
This focused mini camp offers a unique opportunity to experience Japanese craft traditions, storytelling, and creative expression in a short but immersive studio experience.
