A Tribute to Evelyn Harris
The world-renowned Young@Heart Chorus returns to Springfield with a performance reimagined as a tribute and memorial celebration honoring the life and legacy of Evelyn Maria Harris. Evelyn was a towering artistic presence whose career spanned decades—as a member of Sweet Honey In The Rock, a Grammy-nominated composer, and a revered vocalist rooted in gospel, spirituals, and African American musical traditions. Her work blended artistry and activism, using the power of the human voice to tell stories of justice, resilience, and joy. Whether commanding the stage or mentoring others, Evelyn carried music as a living force—deeply expressive, purposeful, and communal.
Developed during an extended residency at the HOPE Center for the Arts, this special program brings together the Young@Heart Chorus, Springfield youth, and special guest artists to honor Evelyn’s extraordinary career and the values she embodied: generosity, mentorship, and fearless self-expression. Through music, spoken reflections, and shared moments onstage, the evening celebrates a life devoted to lifting voices—both literally and figuratively—while continuing Young@Heart’s mission of bridging generations through bold, emotionally resonant performance.
Looking forward as well as back, the concert also serves a lasting purpose. Proceeds from the evening will help establish a fund in Evelyn Maria Harris’s name, dedicated to creating opportunities for young vocalists from underserved communities. Part memorial, part celebration, and fully alive, this performance honors Evelyn Harris not only by remembering her remarkable journey, but by ensuring her legacy continues in the voices she so powerfully inspired.
