Yorkshire & Humber ESOL Lunchtime Showcase
ESOL Literacy
Pre-Entry classes are complex learning environments, presenting particular challenges to the ESOL teacher. One feature of this scenario is the frequent inclusion of learners with limited or no literacy in their home language. If learners are unable to read or write in their home language, developing reading and writing skills in English emerges as a huge challenge. Learners are likely to lack familiarity with writing conventions, struggle to grasp the concept of letter-to-sound relationships, and encounter difficulties with various handwriting styles, fonts, and print formats. All these are issues that ESOL practitioners need to take account of in the Pre-Entry and sometimes other classes too.
In this session we explore some of these issues in more depth, and the strategies developed by colleagues in Yorkshire and Humber to address them. Please join us to learn together and share approaches to ESOL literacy.
