This brand new walking tour will reveal the many ways in which the Irish have shaped the culture of Yonkers, from its earliest days, when a handful became tenant farmers under the Philipse family, to the Industrial Era, when large-scale building projects like the Old Croton Aqueduct and the Hudson River Railroad drew Irish here by the hundreds. We will visit institutions like St. Mary’s (now Immaculate Conception) Church, the first monumental Catholic Church in Westchester and St. Joseph’s Hospital, founded by the Sisters of Charity, and explore the many ways in which the Irish surmounted prejudice and discrimination to become one of the most successful and populous ethnic groups in the city. Join us for this 2.5 mile, 2.5 hour urban hike which begins and ends at Philipse Manor Hall State Historic Site.
Before you Arrive:
This urban hike takes a circular route of approximately 2.5 miles and departs from Philipse Manor Hall State Historic Site (located at 29 Warburton Ave., Yonkers, NY) and includes inclines and hills. Hike lasts 2-2.5 hours. Participants are encouraged to dress for the weather and wear comfortable shoes and sunscreen or a hat. Tour departs promptly at 10:30 a.m., museum opens at 10:00 a.m. Philipse Manor Hall is accessible via Hudson line train, car, or bus. Registration:
Tickets are $10/person, pay at the door. Tickets include museum admission. Pre-registration is recommended, but not required. To register, call 914-965-4027 or email [email protected]. If heavy rain, storms, or road closures occur, this hike will be cancelled. This hike is not recommended for children under age 12.
