Not all veterans experience post-traumatic stress, but hundreds of thousands have been diagnosed with PTSD. Yoga is now widely recognized as an effective way to help manage trauma, offering practical tools for healing, self-regulation, and resilience.
Yoga in Action’s Free Yoga for Veterans program was created to provide convenient, local access to yoga in a safe, supportive environment designed specifically for veterans. The program integrates breathing awareness, mindful movement, meditation, and gratitude practices to help reduce PTSD symptoms and cultivate skills that support daily life.
You are invited to join us for a full-day training intensive. Some prior training or experience in teaching trauma-sensitive yoga is recommended. Part of the lunch break will be used for facilitated discussion. Please wear or bring clothing suitable for gentle movement, bring a bag lunch, and plan to arrive ready to begin promptly at 9:00 a.m.
By the end of this training, participants will:
Gain a meaningful understanding of the unique experiences and strengths of veteran communities
Be able to begin applying trauma-sensitive teaching principles to create safe, empowering spaces for veterans
Feel prepared and inspired to apprentice in teaching YiA Free Yoga for Veterans classes, supporting healing and connection through mindful practice
Please note: A portion of your tuition will be gifted to Yoga in Action to fund accessible yoga programs. Please bring your yoga mat, notebook, water bottle, lunch and any snacks you might like. We have a full kitchen, refrigerator, microwave, filtered hot and cold water on site.
About your trainer:
Nancy Garnhart, MS, LMT has been teaching yoga since 2005. She is the former co-owner and director of Yoga in ME in Eliot, Maine, and the founder and former director of the nonprofit FREE Yoga for Veterans. Nancy is widely respected for her ability to bring the tools of yoga to people of all backgrounds and needs, and she previously served as a senior faculty member with The Hard & The Soft Yoga Institute.
Nancy’s work with veterans began when she enrolled in a Mindful Yoga Therapy (MYT) for Veterans training to fulfill hours toward her 500-hour certification. Those 15 hours transformed her teaching more than any other training she has completed. After returning home, she immediately integrated the MYT principles into all of her classes and launched a weekly free yoga program for veterans based on the 12-week MYT protocol—work that has continued to shape her teaching ever since.
