Pianist, composer, and educator Yayoi Ikawa brings a distinctive voice shaped by her unique cultural journey. Born in Tokyo and musically raised in New York, she has developed a rare fluency across multiple genres—Jazz, Gospel, R&B, Hip-Hop, Classical, African, and Caribbean music—that reflects both her heritage and her cosmopolitan artistic formation.
Ikawa harnesses music as a transformative tool for human connection and understanding. Committed to fostering cross-cultural dialogue through sound, she founded The Bridge Project, an initiative dedicated to building meaningful musical conversations between diverse communities and traditions.
Her collaborative work spans an impressive roster of acclaimed artists and ensembles, including legendary bassist Reggie Workman, vibraphonist Michael Carvin, saxophonist Howard Johnson, pianist Michal Urbaniak, saxophonist Salim Washington, vocalist Emeline Michel, composer James Germain, violinist Daniel Bernard Roumain, the Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company, The Meditations, Kaissa, and Blitz the Ambassador. She has also performed and taught at St. Paul Baptist Church (Montclair, NJ) and the International Jazz and Dance Academy in Slovenia.
Through her work as performer, creator, and educator, Ikawa continues to demonstrate music's profound capacity to inspire empathy, encourage growth, and unite people across cultural boundaries.
