Wye Valley Views & Hilltop History

This guided walk is designed for folks who want to keep the distance down but still enjoy a proper day out in the hills — with views, fresh air, and the quiet confidence that comes from walking as part of a supportive group.
With its hilltop memorial and ancient setting, it’s also a walk that will appeal to those who enjoy stories of place and local history along the way.
We’ll start and finish at Erwood Old Railway Station, now home to a welcoming craft centre and café, beautifully set beside the River Wye in the heart of the Wye Valley.
Our approximately 4-mile circular route begins with a gradual climb, using a mix of tracks, footpaths and bridleways. As we gain height bit by bit, the landscape opens out to reveal sweeping views across the Wye Valley, with the river below and mountains stretching into the distance.
At our highest point, we’ll visit the Garth Gun on Twyn y Garth hill — a striking WWI German howitzer placed here as a war memorial on the site of an ancient fort. The story of how it came to be here is as compelling as the views: acquired by a local woman in memory of fallen soldiers, hauled up the hill by the community around 1920, and later restored as a Millennium project. This powerful landmark offers a real sense of connection to the past and makes this walk especially rewarding for history enthusiasts.
Here we’ll stop for a relaxed packed lunch, taking in the 360-degree views and enjoying the atmosphere of this remarkable place.
The return route gently descends through fields and bridleways back to Erwood — with the very real possibility of tea and cake at the café to round off the day!
This is a hilly but manageable walk, led at a steady, encouraging pace by me Sarah Price, a trained and professional walking guide.
I lead in a way that builds confidence, takes the hills one step at a time, and ensures the group stays together throughout — with plenty of pauses and absolutely no one left behind.
If you enjoy beautiful landscapes, meaningful historic landmarks, and walking with people who value taking their time, this walk will suit you beautifully.
